From our vantage point as executive recruiters in the lighting industry, 2025 saw a pronounced contraction in hiring activity. Organizations adopted a defensive posture, with recruitment slowing steadily and reaching its lowest point in the fourth quarter. In contrast, the first quarter of 2026 delivered a notable rebound, with demand accelerating at a rapid pace.

While current conditions reflect renewed momentum, the broader environment remains uncertain. Geopolitical instability, fluctuating energy costs, and evolving trade policies continue to introduce macroeconomic risk. In this context, preparation and strategic focus are fundamental requirements for both employers and candidates.

We are seeing heightened demand for senior leadership, particularly Chief Revenue Officers, Chief Sales Officers, and Chief Operating Officers capable of navigating operational and market challenges to deliver bottom line growth. At the same time, there is significant need for specialized Regional Sales Managers and Project Managers. The integration of artificial intelligence is now firmly embedded across functions, driving efficiencies in sales support, engineering, and supply chain operations.

Across design firms, manufacturers, and sales rep agencies, the priority is clear: secure proven performers who can deliver immediate, measurable impact. Top qualifications sought include:

  • Relevant channel expertise
  • Strong technical knowledge
  • Established relationships within target channels
  • Demonstrated success supported by quantifiable results (e.g., “drove a 25% revenue increase in a stagnant territory” or “reduced supply chain inefficiencies to improve margins by 15%”)

Application and Profile Best Practices

Profile Consistency: Ensure alignment across your resume, LinkedIn profile, and contact information. Most organizations rely on applicant tracking systems, making consistency essential. Utilize a professional headshot in your LinkedIn profile.

Application Strategy: Focus on roles where your experience closely aligns with job description requirements. Apply promptly, ideally within the first few days of a job posting, and use job alerts to stay on top of new opportunities.

Resume Development: Treat your resume as a strategic marketing document. Limit it to one or two pages, prioritize measurable achievements, and format it for compatibility with AI-driven screening tools by avoiding unnecessary graphics.

Interview Preparation — Recommended Approaches

Define Your Narrative: Be prepared to clearly articulate your value proposition. Connect your track record – such as revenue growth, margin expansion, or channel development –  to the specific needs of the hiring organization. Preparation at this level is often the differentiator in a highly competitive process.

Compensation Alignment: Be ready to discuss your compensation expectations. Ensure your expectations are grounded in your historical performance, including revenue generation and/or margin contribution.

Motivation for Change: Provide a clear, credible rationale for why you are pursuing a new opportunity at this stage in your career.

Interview and Career Considerations

Career Stability: Frequent role changes, particularly employment lasting less than 2.5 years, may raise concerns. If transitions were driven by external factors such as restructuring or acquisitions, address them directly with a clear explanation.

Professional Boundaries: Avoid discussing political or religious views during interviews, as these topics are not appropriate in a professional hiring context, and may detract from your candidacy.

The current lighting industry labor market is characterized by renewed hiring activity paired with ongoing economic uncertainty. Organizations are prioritizing talent that demonstrates clear measurable value, preparation, and consistency.
