Herricks High School to Host WAC Invitational Science Fair
The Research Association of Long Island, New York has announced that Herricks High School will host the annual WAC Lighting Invitational Science Fair, which was established to help promote the education and careers of young scientists and technologists. This year’s fair will be held on Sunday, April 19, from 9AM to Noon at Herricks High School,100 Shelter Rock Road, New Hyde Park, New York.
By participating in the WAC Invitational Science Fair symposium, more than 300 Long Island high school students have the opportunity to present their research projects to esteemed judges from leading institutions and businesses.
The Research Association is a consortium of 10 top high schools represented by teachers who advise students that scientific research is a valuable avenue to understanding the true nature of science.
“This science fair lets students know that it’s wonderful to excel in science, and we are honored to sponsor the Invitational Science Fair again this year,” explained WAC Group President Becky Li. “Hopefully, these young scientists will help solve some of the world’s greatest challenges and contribute to a greater quality of life for all of us.”
The fair includes nine categories, with winners selected from projects developed and completed by high school students (grades 9-12). Awards and scholarships will be presented to First, Second, and Third Place winners as well as Honorable Mentions. The research topics are as varied as the students. Students may spend months or years exploring cures for cancer or producing inexpensive, energy-efficient fuel alternatives.
“We are proud to announce our 16th Annual WAC Lighting Invitational Science Fair,” noted Allyson Weseley, president of the Research Association. “This science fair is important to our young students interested in technology, medicine, environmental science, and other disciplines. One day, they will run the world, and we are proud to help further their career!”
Students explore a variety of subjects, such as Earth and Environmental Science; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; General Biology; Behavioral and Social Sciences; Chemistry; Physics and Astronomy; Computer Science and Modeling; Medicine and Health Sciences.
Students have gone on to pursue advanced studies at leading educational institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stony Brook University, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, the University of Rochester, Carnegie Mellon, Dartmouth, Princeton, Columbia, NYU, and others.
Judges include 100+ academicians and professionals who are affiliated with leading universities, hospitals, and other institutions, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Columbia University, Long Island University, New York University, North Shore University Hospital-LIJ Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medical College, Hofstra University, Mount Sinai Medical Center, St. John’s University. Fordham University, Adelphi and Hofstra Universities.
