DMF Lighting Expands Wildlife-Friendly Luminaire Offering

DMF Lighting wildlife-friendly

In respect for sea turtle conservation and the start of sea turtle nesting season, typically May 1 through October 31, DMF Lighting has announced its expansion of its wildlife-friendly downlighting and cylinder collections. DMF Lighting has also added an advanced next-generation amber LED solution to help designers and specifiers when lighting coastal areas including hotels, restaurants and residences.

DMF Lighting’s turtle-safe lighting solutions include the M Series 4-inch and X Series 2-inch round and square downlights; and the M Series 4-inch and X Series 3-inch cylinders (downlight configuration only).

“DMF’s continued commitment to wildlife conservation drives our latest expansion,” said Ken Czech, vice president of new product development, DMF Lighting. “We’re excited to expand our turtle- and wildlife-friendly offering to include our X Series family and introduce a new advanced next generation amber LED module to help designers that illuminate coastal areas near beaches where sea turtles migrate.”

DMF products feature a modular design (housing, LED light engine module and trim) and include a deep amber LED light engine module option that follows turtle-safe lighting practices – wavelengths greater than 560 nanometers (nm) – recommended by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), as well as the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), among others.

Sea turtles lay eggs on beaches, and hatchlings instinctively head towards the ocean, guided by the bright, high-blue spectrum moonlight. Traditional electric lights, which contain high levels of blue light, can disorient hatchlings. To protect them, guideline recommendations include using lights that emit wavelengths of 560 nm or higher, which appear as deep amber or orange and are less distracting to sea turtles. Providing the ultimate in performance, installation and serviceability, DMF’s downlights and cylinders feature tool-less, field-interchangeable optics, modules and trims, allowing for simply serviceability, easy design changes, and onsite aiming flexibility to meet specific application needs. Drivers are integrated into the modules versus the housing, so modules can be easily swapped out with below ceiling access. The 4-inch M Series downlights and cylinders and the 2-inch X Series downlights and 3-inch cylinders are available in specific configurations to meet wildlife lighting specifications.
