Designery Sessions Return to LFI Show Floor
May 17, 2022
Following last year’s successful launch, LightFair is bringing back the Designery – a series of 13 hour-long educational sessions presented inside the Design Pavilion on the exhibit floor at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“Design education on the show floor provides further value to the exhibit hall pass, especially for attendees with limited time to explore everything LightFair has to offer,” said Dan Darby, Show Director. “Designery programming will help LightFair designers and specifiers identify design-driven lighting and lighting-adjacent tools that they can directly explore in the exhibit hall.”
The Designery, which is a design-dedicated seminar space located within LightFair’s Design Pavilion, will present hour-long educational sessions led by renowned lighting designers, architects, specifiers, and interior designers.
The educational sessions will take place as moderated discussions, conversations, case studies, presentations, and leadership panels. Nine presentations each offer 1.0 CEU credit: ART LIGHT: Transcendent Illumination presented by Charles Stone; Plants vs People presented by Christopher Bishop; Spotlight on the Queer Experience in Lighting presented by Alana Shepard; Light on Waste: Evaluating the Impact of LED Lighting presented by Christine Cornelius, Sara Duffy, and Zach Suchara; The Art of Landscape Illumination presented by Dawn Hollingsworth and Kathryn Toth; Health, Hospitality and our Environment presented by Brennan Schumacher and Janelle Drouet; From the Spark of an Idea to the Flip of the Switch presented by Clara Bukalski, Lisa Reed,Liz Arras, Dick Pendleton, Kaitlin Page, Brad Picht, and Bob King; Creative Techniques for Conveying Lighting Concepts presented by Emlyn Altman; LIGHT FIXTURE CONSIDERATIONS Materials, Light Quality, Future Proofing, and Flexibility presented by Anna-Lisa Conners; and Using UV Light as a Disinfectant presented by Laura Cowley and Pieter De Bod.
Access to Designery educational sessions is included with LightFair trade show exhibit floor access. Attendees can purchase trade show access individually, or it is included with the purchase of Conference sessions. Registration for the LightFair Trade Show & Conference here

Beginning with a brief history of horticultural lighting leading up to today, this session will overview the different metrics & terminology used in plant light science compared to traditional lighting design, examine the state of the industry taking an in-depth look at cannabis production facilities, microgreen & vegetable greenhouses and indoor insect farms for protein to highlight the diverse applications using plant-light science and take a closer look at the importance & value in horticultural design. From retrofit costs to microclimates and uniformity issues, this session will bring attention to the keys to success.
2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Spotlight on the Queer Experience in Lighting
Speaker: Alana Shepherd – NACLIQ – North American Coalition of Lighting Industry Queer
1 hour CEU credit
Veterans from different corners of the lighting and design world share their perspectives as LGBTQ professionals. This session will discuss differences in the amount of inclusion and respect in the design world as compared to sales and manufacturing, small-market vs. major market experiences, the unique
challenges faced by trans professionals, being a good ally, strategies for increasing diversity, and much more.
3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Shadows in Lighting Design – Layering the Light Hierarchy
Speaker: Alin Maxon – Maxon Designs
Incorporating Shadow and Poetry into Lighting Design – Orchestrating Experiential Solutions. Often in the Design Scope of Work the lumens and fixture count can take precedence over the quiet but important voice of lighting poetry. Solutions in design are a response to the questions asked. This session will explore how to incorporate this intuitive exploration at the onset of the project to help identify opportunities for surprise, comfort and delight.
5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Light on Waste: Evaluating the Impact of LED Lighting
Speaker: Christine Cornelius, Sara Duffy, Zach Suchara – Luma Lighting Design
1 hour CEU credit
The Construction and Design industry is at a turning point in the transition to sustainable building materials and processes. Circularity, carbon neutrality, and human-centered metrics are moving to the forefront of design process and practice.
The lighting industry still has work to do. Typical LED components are comprised of finite resources, and data on embodied energy, carbon impact, and waste stream is extremely limited. As LED becomes the predominant light source globally, it’s time to re-evaluate the full impact of a luminaire. From material excavation to end-of-life treatment, from design layout to controls commissioning – it all makes a difference.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22

The Art of Landscape Illumination
Speaker: Dawn Hollingsworth – Darkhorse Lightworks, Kathryn Toth – Theia Lighting Design
1 hour CEU credit
The art of landscape lighting begins with the development of an artistic design plan. Landscape lighting is one of the most underestimated design components within the landscape environment. This session will present and explore techniques to illustrate how design thinking can enhance the client’s nighttime experience. Design, equipment, plant materials, growth patterns, and maintenance all need to be considered when developing a successful landscape lighting solution.
