Vivid lighting was selected as part of the renovation for this British hospital in order to make it look more inviting and more appealing to visitors.Bespoke architectural dynamic lighting solutions provider Studiotech, headquartered in the U.K., was asked to create a welcoming new lighting façade for National Health Service (NHS) Tameside, Werneth House.

Located in the borough of Tameside, on the east side of Greater Manchester in England, Werneth House accommodates the Post Graduate Medical Education, the Knowledge and Library Services, and IT Training suites of Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The building includes an assortment of meeting rooms as well as a 120-seat, fully equipped lecture theater. In addition to a dining room, there is an informal area for networking and refreshments. Conveniently adjacent to the new multi-level parking garage, Werneth House also serves as a venue for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events.

Up until the renovation, Werneth House had an institutionalized and unwelcoming exterior. Since the NHS strives to positively enhance patients’ experience right from the point at which they approach the hospital site to the building entrance, it was decided that Werneth House be brought to life with light.

The new façade was undertaken as part of a wider scheme to recognize that the NHS is being modernized, and to instill confidence and help promote the general well-being of both patients and staff.StudioTech Green 400x275

Utilizing fixtures from Traxon Technologies and control systems from Traxon e:cue Lighting Control, Studiotech used vertical light lines to visually deconstruct the building and make it feel lighter and less monolithic in appearance.

NHS’ classic color schemes are reflected throughout the façade, with the added benefit of being able to change the color of these scenes to highlight special moments and events.

When lighting a façade, the light needs to feel like it blends within the architecture. Studiotech created an effect that looks as if the new light is integrated into the building. The building now appears softened, more inviting, and less harsh on the eyes due to this new integrated lighting solution.

Studiotech uses the connection between light and communication to help patients feel more confident and reassured that they will receive a consistent, high level of individual care while at Werneth House.

Michelle Waddicor, Head of Estates, stated, “As a Trust, we are thrilled with how Studiotech managed to transform our Werneth Building with something as simple as lighting. Since its installation, we’ve received nothing but positive feedback about the difference it has made to our staff and visitors. From start to finish, Studiotech have been great to work with, but what we’ve enjoyed most is the seeing the passion that Ed and the team have for lighting to translate into something that our staff, patients, and visitors can all enjoy.”
