Lighting Robots Are (Almost) Here

LEDVANCE’s AI Companion Lighting Robot wins 2026 German Innovation award.

Elix, an “intelligent” robot developed by general lighting company LEDVANCE, combines lighting and robotics with “emotional interaction.” The overarching concept is that light provides more than illumination; it determines how people work and feel. To that end, Elix reacts in real time to the activities, moods, and gestures of users, thereby enabling an adaptive, lifelike interaction.

Fresh off of its premiere at Lichtwoche Sauerland and Light + Building this spring, Elix won the “Excellence in Business to Consumer Lighting” category at the German Innovation Awards 2026 in May.

“Receiving the German Innovation Award validates our approach of rethinking light and pushing the boundaries of what is possible,” explains Dr. Ulrich Weiss, LEDVANCE’s head of product management & innovation & global IT. “The development of Elix underscores the spirit of innovation and the technological direction we are aiming for.”

According to Elix’s developers, the project demonstrates “how artificial intelligence and advanced robotics can harmoniously occupy the interface between humans and technology.”

What does it do?

The AI-enabled “lighting robot” features two operating modes: In Task Lighting Mode, an integrated AI camera automatically detects five application scenarios, including reading, writing, and video conferencing. When in Task Lighting Mode, a six-axis robotic arm directs the light precisely onto the user’s work area. Simultaneously, the color temperature and intensity adjust automatically to enhance visual comfort and reduce eye strain.

When in Emotional Lighting Mode, Elix recognizes the user’s facial expressions and gestures and translates them into individually tailored lighting moods, colors, movements, and acoustic feedback. Through integrated gesture control, the robot follows hand movements in real time or reacts gently to touches on its housing.

Why it won

In its official statement, the jury of the German Innovation Awards noted that Elix addresses the challenge of tailoring light to individual needs and moods in an exceptionally innovative way.

Most notably, the jury said, “Elix responds sensitively to activities and moods, specifically adjusting light color and intensity to create an atmosphere that promotes both concentration and well-being. Through the combination of artificial intelligence, gesture control, and dynamic light scenes, an intuitive companion is created that enriches everyday life and sets new standards in human-technology interaction. This holistic concept equally considers visual performance, biological needs, and emotional aspects, demonstrating how forward-looking technology harmoniously connects the space and its users.”

LEDVANCE’s Elix is not for sale or available to the general public. It was created specifically to highlight future possibilities in technology and innovation.
