Topics include design advocacy, systems strategy and pitfalls, sensory-friendly design, and real-world impacts from museum staff and local advocacy groups.

Presenter: John Delfino | Associate Principal, Available Light, Inc

AI as a Lighting Designer’s Assistant: Practical Tools for Analysis, Comparison, and Clarity

AI is already making its way into the lighting industry, often behind the scenes. This session takes a practical, no-hype look at how designers can use AI as a tool – not a threat – to support analysis, comparison, and documentation while keeping creative control firmly in human hands. Through real-world examples, attendees will learn where AI adds value, where it falls short, and how to use it strategically to save time and reduce friction.

Presenter: Ardra Zinkon | CLD, IALD, President, Director of Lighting Design, Zinkon Creative Studio

LP-30: A Phase-by-Phase Approach to TM-30

An introduction to ANSI/IES LP-30 and its phase-by-phase implementation of TM-30 — from schematic design through construction documentation. Learn how TM-30’s design intents of Preference, Vividness, and Fidelity can broaden color rendering goals and elevate lighting quality across a project. Followed by a live demonstration of light sources illustrating each design intent and their influence on color perception.

Presenter: Jason Livingston | IES, IALD, LC, Principal, Studio T+L, LLC

Now You See Me – Now You Don’t

A practical introduction to lighting design for non-lighting professionals. Through case studies spanning casino gaming tables, classrooms for the hard of hearing, sports facilities, and safety-critical environments, explore how the angle, direction, and distribution of light affects visual comfort, communication, performance, and safety. Covers glare control, contrast, visibility, and layered lighting — and how thoughtful lighting decisions shape behavior and effectiveness across a wide range of spaces.

Speakers:

o             Julia M. Gordon | Senior Lighting Designer, Schuler Shook

o             Leigh Gice

OMG The 80’s Are Historic? – Gregory Bateson Building Case Study

Built in the 1980s as the most sustainable building in the U.S., Sacramento’s Gregory Bateson Building now carries a historic designation — and a renovation challenge. How do you preserve lighting that defines historic character while meeting current energy codes and light level standards? This case study explores those tensions and the spirited debates around what even counts as “historic” when the light sources are merely recently antiquated.

Speakers:

o             Sanjana Adavi | Lighting Designer, CannonDesign

o             Coffield King
