The developers of a luxury residential apartment building in fashionable Arlington, Virginia, wanted distinctive design statements throughout the property.

An easy commute to Washington, D.C., the Azure at National Landing luxury apartment residences in Arlington, Virginia, are inspired by modern boutique hotel spaces. WBE-certified firm One Line Design Studio – which has its headquarters in Miami and an office in Detroit – handled the interior design throughout the building.

For a lounge area, the design firm collaborated with Seattle-based lighting manufacturer LightArt (part of Armstrong Integrated Lighting group) to create a custom Ribbon Sculpture that would elevate the upscale residential experience. Spanning an overall footprint of 8″ high x 28.9′ long x 8′ wide, the installation features a dynamic architectural look that defines the expansive resident lounge without overwhelming the space.

The composition is comprised of a series of precision-crafted ribbons of translucent suede varia/clear in a vellum finish — each measures approximately 8″ high x 96″ long x ¼-inch thick. In all, there are 92 individual “ribbons” installed within the fixture. These sculptural elements flow in a continuous, wave-like rhythm that conveys movement, depth, and texture to the ceiling plane. The design integrates with the existing lighting, allowing illumination to wash between the layered forms. Adjustble stainless steel cables secure the sculpture to the ceiling.

The main goal of the Ribbon Sculpture is to anchor the lounge visually, drawing the eye upward and complementing the clean lines, warm materials, and open-plan layout curated by One Line Design Studio. This custom linear fixture delivers a refined, site-specific solution that brings artistry, scale, and subtle drama to a modern multifamily setting.

The lounge area – which includes social seating and a central fireplace – is among the resident amenities located on the second floor, alongside a rooftop fitness center and yoga room, a resort-style pool, outdoor kitchen with gas grills and dining area, and outdoor terrace with fireplace and TV.

LightArt manufactures its products by hand in the Pacific Northwest and offers a choice of 50 colors in warm and cool tones.
