Signify Details New Program to Support a Circular Economy & Achieve Net Zero
With LEDucation 2026 coming up next month – where more and more exhibitors will be promoting their environmental mindfulness through DECLARE signage, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and compatibility with the WELL v2 Building Standard – Signify unveiled the latest chapter in its Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 initiative during the Light + Building show in Germany last week.
One of the aspects of the program getting the most attention is Signify’s plan to support the idea of a circular economy. According to Signify spokesperson Beth Brenner of the company’s U.S. Integrated Communications department, “The Signify Circle program will start in Europe, as this region is currently the front-runner for circular regulation. Starting in this region will help to create a model for future expansion to the U.S.”
As part of its plan to advance the circular economy, Signify will scale durable, upgradable, repairable and recyclable products, alongside circular services. These solutions are designed for circularity, following a “use less, use longer, use again” framework that aims to reduce the consumption of virgin materials and energy while delivering long-term customer value.
Signify Circle revenues will include four categories:
• Signify Circle products
• Light as a Service (LaaS)
• Remanufacture
• Spare parts and upgrade kits
These products and services will constitute the Signify Circle initiative for professional customers to support their own circular economy ambitions. It delivers products, services and business models that are aligned to stringent circular standards, alongside clear and transparent labelling and customer education.
According to a statement released by the company outlining its Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 plan, Signify said these products and services will constitute Signify Circle — a new initiative for professional customers to support their circular economy ambitions. It will deliver products, services and business models that are aligned to stringent circular standards, alongside clear and transparent labelling and customer education.
Brenner noted that The Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 sustainability program complements NEMA’s 2026 agenda. “We are helping to accelerate the shift to connected and energy-efficient lighting technologies, to address rising electricity demand, volatile energy pricing, resource scarcity, and the need for healthier, safer, more resilient built environments,” she said.
Added As Tempelman, CEO of Signify, “Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 is designed to deliver solutions that improve lives, save energy and make better use of resources — which is exactly what our customers are asking for. It shows that impact and opportunity go hand in hand, as we create real value for society, while building a stronger, more resilient company.”
By focusing on its customers’ most pressing challenges, Signify’s Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 aims to address the rising demand for efficient, connected and electrified solutions.
“We’re proud to introduce the third chapter of Brighter Lives, Better World. Our new program builds on the progress of the past decade, remaining fully committed to our 2040 net zero ambition, with new targets that focus on reducing the energy and resource consumption of our customers, while continuing to drive innovations that improve safety and security and health and well-being,” said Maurice Loosschilder, head of Sustainability at Signify.
The company will continue to expand the role of lighting that is designed to improve quality of life, support more welcoming and productive indoor environments, enhance safety and security in cities and communities, enable more efficient food production, and increase access to solar lighting. To that end, Signify estimates that by the end of 2030, 41% of revenues will come from solutions that support benefits beyond illumination, rising from 31% in 2024.
Similarly, Signify is focused on energy efficiency as a growth accelerator. The company noted, “Energy efficiency is a powerful enabler of electrification and the energy transition. Through continuous advances in LED and connected lighting, Signify helps customers reduce energy demand, manage costs and lower emissions.”
By the end of 2030, Signify pledges to:
• Cumulatively save 60 TWh of energy for customers
• Achieve a 35% reduction in portfolio CO₂ emission intensity annualized
An expanded Signify Switch program offers guidance on how efficient LED and connected lighting can advance energy- and cost-savings and emissions reduction, as well as how to improve the quality of indoor and outdoor lighting, contribute to street safety and install solar lighting where the grid may not be available. Customers can receive support in choosing the right lighting products, systems and services, as well as identifying sources of finance and funding.
What does the new initiative mean for specifiers? Brenner said that specifiers can have confidence that they are designing with energy efficiency and long-term performance in mind when they use Signify’s LED and connected products. “We continue to share the environmental impact of our product ranges with transparency through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Declare labeling. Many of our product configurations also contribute toward satisfying green building/high-performance standards and systems, including the WELL v2 Building Standard, further linking to the goals of this program.”
For the U.S. market, Brenner explained that the Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 sustainability program is designed to expand the reach of impactful, energy and resource-efficient lighting to Signify’s customers. “In the U.S., progress cannot be made without our sales agent representatives and distributors,” she said, adding, “They will have access to 1) a partner with verified credentials and that is demonstrating accountability, 2) continued education, so we can mutually support our customers and 3) a portfolio that meets growing demand for sustainability criteria and that aligns with codes and regulations, so they are set up to win specifications and high-value projects.”
Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 is underpinned by Signify’s long-term commitments to low nature impact manufacturing, inclusive workplaces, fair working conditions throughout the value chain, and expanding access to lighting for underserved communities – ensuring growth is built on transparency, inclusiveness, and respect for human rights.
Progress on Signify’s Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 program will be reported on a quarterly basis, in line with the company’s financial results.
