Utility/DOT Roadway and High Mast Install

Background

Mobile, Alabama is a port city located on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. With a population of over 180,000 residents and a vibrant 300-year history, Mobile is a melting pot of people, flavors, cultures, and traditions. (https://www.mobile.org/)

Challenge

Mobile was like so many other cities and towns looking to update their old and inefficient roadway lighting. In their project scope they wanted to improve safety, increase energy efficiency, and reduce costs. They also wanted to minimize the different types of luminaires being used to keep the project simple and clean, while also streamlining it for future maintenance; a difficult challenge to accommodate for over 1,700 luminaires and various roadway and high mast applications.

Before:

Solution

Cooper Lighting Solutions was able to utilize one fixture type for the various roadway and high mast applications in Mobile with the Streetworks Navion luminaire. The Navion luminaire offers a wide variety of optical distributions and features, making it a great solution for roadway and high mast applications. Another key requirement for the city was for the new light fixtures to allow for fast and easy maintenance. Since the project was in high traffic areas, this helps minimize interruptions to traffic and helps keep their contractors safe by getting them on and off the job quickly.

The project also called for 20kV surge protection and a weight consideration for older high mast structures. The Navion was able to easily eliminate these concerns to get the job done.
