Focal Point Develops Novel Tandem Healthcare Luminaire

Focal Point Saros Duo

Focal Point has expanded its healthcare lighting portfolio with Saros Duo™, a thoughtfully designed tandem overbed luminaire that integrates biophilic design principles, circadian lighting strategies, and clinician-focused functionality to enhance patient care environments. Purpose-built for patient rooms, examination rooms, and ambulatory care areas, Saros Duo delivers research-backed lighting solutions that foster well-being, entrain natural sleep/wake cycles, and create a visually comfortable space for both patients and clinical staff.

Saros Duo draws inspiration from nature’s restorative beauty, integrating gentle curves like the contours of the horizon and the warm radiance of a sunset.  More than just aesthetic, it’s human-centric engineering, anchored in the latest research on circadian entrainment and Melanopic EDI, softens the clinical setting, reducing patient stress and reinforcing a connection to the natural world. Through programmable lighting scenes that synchronize the body’s circadian rhythm, Saros Duo helps create a sense of comfort and tranquility and promotes recovery.

“Saros Duo redefines healthcare lighting by seamlessly blending functional design, biophilic form, and restorative benefits,” said Dan Schwade, Senior Product Design Engineer at Focal Point. “It’s not just about light; the thoughtful blending of color temperatures and intensities mimics nature’s stimuli and supports circadian entrainment. However, this product goes even further by incorporating a stunning horizon-like shape which also evokes a biophilic response, further enhancing its therapeutic benefits.”

Saros Duo provides three distinct lighting scenes, two exam modes, and an integrated reading light, all designed to enhance patient comfort and clinical functionality while supporting circadian entrainment.

Three distinct lighting scenes:
  • Daytime: Vibrant, direct lighting with Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (Melanopic EDI) of 250+ lux to promote alertness and support healthy sleep-wake cycles
  • Evening: Soft, indirect illumination with Melanopic EDI of 10 lux or less to foster relaxation and prepare the body for rest
  • Nighttime: Amber light with no blue wavelengths, designed to minimize sleep disruptions while supporting caregiver tasks
Two exam modes:
  • Regular and High lumen outputs: provide 75 to 100 foot-candles and a Cyanosis Observation Index (COI) of 3.3 or less
Integrated reading light:
  • For enhanced patient comfort and autonomy, the integrated reading light allows patients to control their own lighting environment via the pillow speaker.

By seamlessly integrating Exam, Ambient, Reading, and Amber Night Light functions into one novel luminaire, Saros Duo offers an intuitive and adaptable lighting experience that prioritizes patient wellness and clinical efficiency.

Simple installation and maintenance: Saros Duo is engineered for easy integration into healthcare settings. With a standard housing of 1’ x 4’ dimensions and 4” depth, it is ideal for grid and drywall ceilings with restricted plenum space.

Design includes:
  • Master and satellite configuration requiring a single power feed
  • Room-side access to drivers and LED boards via drop-down diffuser door assembly for ease of maintenance
  • Sealed construction with NSF & IP65- rated housing
  • WHA Anti-microbial Matte Satin White finish to ensure cleanliness
  • Acrylic lens engineered for stringent cleaning protocols of healthcare environments

Saros Duo brings human-centric lighting to healthcare spaces, enhancing both patient experiences and clinical efficiency. By combining circadian lighting capabilities, a fresh and robust design, and lighting modes meeting the requirements of ANSI / IES RP-29-22, it fosters a restorative environment that supports well-being, recovery, and precision in care.

New wall-mount, vanity luminaires
Seem 1 & 2 Vanity are wall-mounted, bidirectional luminaires designed for healthcare bathroom or public restroom applications. The two-foot-long individual luminaires offer easy maintenance with a wipe-down friendly design and soft, ambient lighting. Seem 1 Vanity can be enhanced with lit end caps or a 0.5” pop-down lens while Seem 2 Vanity offers a pop-up and two pop-down lenses of 0.5” or 1.5” for a more decorative take on a simple and efficient luminaire. They seamlessly integrate with other Seem 1 and Seem 2 family luminaires, providing a cohesive lighting solution for patient bathrooms and other areas of healthcare facilities.
