NICOR Delivers Reliability at Data Center Scale

The explosive growth of data centers has reshaped the electrical and lighting landscape across the United States. Hyperscale campuses now span hundreds of acres, co‑location facilities are multiplying in every major metro area, and AI‑driven computing loads are pushing infrastructure requirements to new extremes.

In this environment, lighting is a mission‑critical system that must survive heat, condensation, corrosive environments, and unforgiving construction schedules. It’s a challenge – but one that NICOR Lighting is up for.

NICOR entered into the data center vertical early and has been able to turn it into one of the company’s strongest markets.

In the Beginning

Kirk Brown, NICOR’s national accounts senior sales manager, noted that the company’s foray into the data centers vertical began nearly a decade ago when CEO Rocky Lawrence recognized a problem that most manufacturers hadn’t yet encountered: Standard LED fixtures in data centers were failing in high‑temperature zones behind server racks, where exhaust air routinely reaches 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

These areas sit just inches behind the frames and represent some of the harshest thermal conditions in any commercial building. NICOR engineered architectural linear fixtures rated to 50 to 55 degrees Celsius (roughly 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit), ensuring long‑term reliability where typical luminaires degrade within months. That early investment positioned NICOR as a trusted partner for national operators and the engineers who design their facilities.

Today, NICOR supports hyperscale and co‑location projects across the country, working with engineering teams at Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta, as well as local specifiers and design‑build contractors. The company enters projects through multiple channels, from engineers familiar with NICOR requesting the company directly to contractors substituting NICOR into packages because they trust the performance and availability. This multipath approach has made NICOR a consistent presence in data center construction, even when the original design calls for another brand.

One of NICOR’s strongest differentiators is its reliability when it comes to supply. With major distribution centers in Albuquerque and Beaufort, Georgia, plus a third‑party facility in California, NICOR maintains deep inventory and can ships fixture within 24 hours of release.

Interior, Exterior, and Everything in Between

The conditions within and around the data center mean every space has unique requirements. NICOR’s portfolio has options to cover every application. High‑temperature zones rely on thermally rated fixtures. Battery rooms require vapor‑tight or hazard‑rated housings to protect against fumes from acid or lithium systems. Condensation areas need sealed enclosures. Office and admin spaces use standard troffers and downlights. Egress paths depend on emergency and exit lighting. Exterior security lighting ensures safe movement at all hours.

Lighting controls add another layer of specialization. While wireless controls are gaining traction in commercial buildings, Brown said that data centers overwhelmingly reject them due to encryption and security concerns. NICOR supports this concern by designing wired, siloed control systems that operate independently of the facility’s network infrastructure. These systems use occupancy sensing, scheduling, and time‑clock automation to reduce energy use without exposing the building to wireless vulnerabilities.

Customer Pain Points = New Ideas

NICOR’s willingness to innovate beyond lighting has also produced unexpected solutions. The company is one of the largest manufacturers of residential door chimes in the United States, a diversification that began decades ago when NICOR identified a gap in new‑construction supply chains.

More recently, NICOR developed power distribution carts and cable assemblies that reduce data center commissioning time from 30 days to three. These rolling systems allow operators to test every server and IT device quickly and safely, demonstrating NICOR’s ability to engineer solutions that improve operational efficiency even outside traditional lighting categories.

While NICOR started as a regional lighting supplier more than 40 years ago, the company is far more than that today. Its willingness to innovate to meet new challenges has made it a go-to national partner for mission‑critical environments.
